Bali:
a photojournal This photo journal by Barrie Lie-Birchall contains both photos and prose. Photography was taken by the author, and prose was written by the author. Click on the images below to open Barrie's photo journal in a new window. With an area of 5,624 square metres, the small island of Bali is the gem of Indonesia. A diversity of topography - arid areas to lush tropical jungles and steep mountainous regions - compliments Bali's semi-tropical climate. There is estimated to be ten thousand temples on the island. Roughly 95% of the population's religion is a mixture of Animism and Indian Hindu. They pray and worship their Gods daily and in ritual temple ceremonies throughout the year. Bali has almost everything to offer the traveller. Although a 'tourist island' - the main tourist area being a small coastal strip in the south-west - it is in the interior of the island where the beauty of Bali, its culture and stunning scenery can be found. Because of the small size of the island, almost every area is accessible and every turn down any road produces a delightful surprise - whether it's a river with fast flowing rapids, monkeys playing cheekily on the road, or a view down into a ravine that suddenly rises to a mountain or mountain range covered in mist. It is no wonder then that the island of Bali is referred to as 'Paradise Isle'. Some other articles by Barrie Lie-Birchall: ParangtritisA Beach Not Too Far
