The Long Trip Home •

Welcome to The Long Trip Home, a 'literary magazine for travelers.' We are currently accepting submissions. The Long Trip Home is a site for writers and travelers to share their travel experiences in a creative, literary way, through poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, travel essays, travel journals, and photojournals. We accept some travel guides if they are done in a creative and interesting style. The aspect we are mainly searching for in submitted works is good, quality writing. Before submitting an article, read some of our current category pieces to get an idea of the diversity and creativity of our writing.Checking out the past 'Editor's Pick' monthly winners is a good place to start.

Interested in submitting your writing or photography to The Long Trip Home? We accept written submissions up to 1500 words in length. Please include the title of the piece and the word "submission" in your email subject line. We cannot respond immediately to submissions, so give us at least a month to respond to your email. If you hear no response, feel free to email us: with all of the spam received at our email address, sometimes things get deleted that shouldn't.

We also accept low res (72 dpi) photography submissions. The Long Trip Home's contents are updated on a quarterly basis (January, April, July, October). Here are some key points to note before sending us photography:

If you are submitting a photojournal to be reviewed, please send 72 res photos no larger than 4x6 inches (10x15 cm) in size. A typical photo journal piece may contain up to 12-15 photos and no fewer than 5.

If you are submitting a written piece and would like photos to accompany it, please send the written piece first, without the photos, so that we can review it and get back to you. Mention that you have photographs, and, if the piece is accepted, we will contact you about them.

List of Upcoming Spotlights (and deadlines).

landscapes/cityscapes

Travel writing today offers more than just a geography lesson. Put that pen to paper and tell us about the cities you've visited or the countries you've explored. In this category, you'll not only find creative travel guides filled with place to place details and information, but you'll also find personal accounts that focus on a specific city or country.

    travel journals
Travel journals detail our journeys in a personal way. From letters home and personal reflections to photographic essays and diary entries, travel journals can take many different forms. In this category, you'll find many of these forms, including written journals and photography journals. (If you are submitting a photo journal, choose anywhere from 5-15 photos that best represent your travel experiences.)

the road less traveled
Would you exchange the comforts of extravagant travel for one- of-a-kind experiences? Trade in your hiking gear for pen and paper and your language barriers for the keyboard. Write about your journeys and experiences in the adventure zones or lesser known treasures of the world. Info or facts about the places involved would also be a plus.

    fiction & poetry
Are you a budding Robert Browning? Want to write like Ernest Hemmingway? Fiction and poetry give us the opportunity to travel without leaving home, and some of the best travel writing is done with this kind of creativity. Even if you aren't established yet, this is a good place to start. Send us your fiction and poetry about travel!

spotlight
Let your creativity shine! Every quarter there is a new Spotlight topic: from a city or country to topics like air travel and backpacking. Keep your articles focused on the quarterly category to get published for that quarter's Spotlight. Please note that if your article is not chosen for the quarterly spotlight category, it still may be published later in one of the other categories. You will be notified if this is the case.
